Russia Stands Firm with Venezuela
Since September, Washington has stationed numerous naval vessels in the region, targeting boats it claims are engaged in drug trafficking and preventing oil tankers from entering or leaving Venezuelan waters.
The US maintains that narcotics traffickers operate from Venezuela with government support. Caracas has firmly rejected these accusations, arguing instead that Washington is attempting to orchestrate regime change to gain access to Venezuela’s natural resources.
On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, voicing “serious concern over Washington’s increasingly escalatory actions in the Caribbean Sea,” as noted in an official statement.
Lavrov warned that the US military buildup could “lead to far-reaching consequences for the region and create a threat to international maritime navigation.”
Over the weekend, several media outlets, citing unnamed American officials, reported that the US Coast Guard was in “active pursuit” of a Venezuela-linked oil tanker in international waters. In the past two weeks alone, US forces have seized two tankers.
