Protests Erupt in Caracas After Maduro’s Capture
Supporters of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) marched to demand the return of the former leader. Organized by PSUV Secretary General Diosdado Cabello and street mobilization chief Nahum Fernandez, the pro-government demonstrators gathered early to express their defiance.
“We will protest with conviction that justice will prevail,” said Fernandez, reaffirming that the movement would remain in the streets to offer “absolute support” to the government. While calling for Maduro’s return, the leadership emphasized their loyalty to Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who took office on January 5, to maintain stability “in any scenario.”
Other protesters focused on seeking justice for victims of state violence, demanding accountability for high-ranking officials implicated in past abuses and guarantees that human rights violations will not recur.
Maduro remains in a U.S. federal prison as legal proceedings continue in New York, facing four major charges: conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess illegal weapons.
Since assuming power, Rodriguez has introduced a General Amnesty Law aimed at releasing hundreds of political prisoners held since 1999. She has also ordered the closure of the infamous El Helicoide prison, long criticized as a site of torture, with plans to repurpose it as a sports, cultural, and social center for local Caracas neighborhoods.
